Published

| The fourth edition of the EUGENE2 training course was held in Anacapri, Sept. 28-30, 2008. Once again, the meeting was dedicated to the younger members of the consortium. Fourtyfive from different consortium member participated. The scientific sessions included keynote lectures, project presentations by the attending early stage researchers (ESRs), and poster discussions. This year lectures were delivered by Prof. Ulf Smith, Hans Jorst, Pierre Lefebvre and Emmanuel Van Obberghen. In separate sessions, all of the attending ESRs were given the opportunity to present their ongoing scientific projects, focusing on how its future development was anticipated. These sessions were led by an experienced investigator who served as chairman and was assisted by three ESRs who served as discussants and helped in maintain the scientific discussions productive. Further discussion was enabled through dedicated poster sessions. At the end of the meeting, this exercise led each attendant to have a picture of who is doing what within the consortium ESRs. It was felt that, in conjunction with the social events of the meeting, this program has been of help in achieving a more extensive ESR integration into EUGENE2 activities and set the basis for continuation even beyond the consortium funding by the EU. |

Executive Summary
It can be stated that EUGENE2 represents a project of outstanding quality which has even exceeded expectations. Objectives, workplan and milestones for the third period have been met and the joint research platforms have conducted successful work. Twenty joint publications in 2007 in high-ranking Journals emphasize that this NoE is conducting research of the highest calibre. Generation of the world’s largest database of carefully phenotyped individuals at high risk of type 2 diabetes is extremely important for future research. The consortium is also very successful regarding commercialization of results and has performed tremendous efforts on training and integration of young researchers.
Overall, EUGENE2 is of key importance and a major driving force of diabetes research in Europe.
